Sew the Merchant & Mills Trapeze Dress

In this day course you will sew your own Trapeze dress from Merchant and Mills. This flared, round necked dress falls just below the knee and has multiple options for sleeves and sleeveless fits, making this item a year-round staple in any wardrobe. You will learn to use a dressmaking pattern; alter it to fit your size; cut out, neaten edges and attach facings and sleeves. Different types of seams will be covered and any processes needed to complete your dress at home.

Ability Level: Confident beginner/Intermediate.

Course Duration: Saturday 11th May, 9.30am - 4pm with half an hour for lunch

You will learn:

- How to use a dressmaking pattern

- How to attach sleeves

- To improve your dressmaking skills

- How to sew facings in a garment

You will need to bring:

Tools needed:

-A sewing machine in good working order Please note that a machine that has been sat unused for some time will likely need a service to run to its full potential.

-Your machine manual, if you have it

-General sewing kit including: fabric scissors, tape measure, fabric marker or chalk, pins, safety pins, seam ripper etc

-Spare machine needles

- Optional: Carbon paper and tracing wheel

Materials needed:

- Suitable material: a medium weight cotton or linen fabric works best but can also be made in a viscose for a more drapey outcome

- Fabric requirements will vary between 1.7m and 3m depending on size and style. The staff at Truro Fabrics are more than happy to help with this

- Approximately 40cm of medium weight interfacing

- Matching thread

About your tutor:

Helen has a passion for sewing and textiles. Currently she does private tuition, workshops, commission sewing, repairs and alterations. She has over thirty years teaching experience, both with children and adults. She especially enjoys passing her knowledge onto others and seeing their delight in their achievements.
